Declaration of Intent
We are a group of people interested in Rust on embedded devices. This group stems from the Rust Berlin on Location Meetup and has the following objectives:
- learning and helping others to learn Rust for embedded devices and microcontrollers;
- experiment with various types of hardware;
- build a device that satisfies the above objectives.
During our first meet-and-greet on 17 July 2025, it became clear that most participants shared the following ideas: we want to learn more about Rust and embedded development for fun, and perhaps to fill a gap. Many of us felt that the market lacks technology and devices that treat their users fairly, and we hope to change that by building our own devices that meet these criteria:
- prevent programmed obsolescence;
- be repairable and upgradeable, ideally with tools that can be found at home;
- does not require a subscription and is free to use forever;
- does not collect user data and is privacy aware, and/or offer a way to collect data securely and on-premise.
Clearly, the context in which this group was formed and its objectives call for maximum transparency and open-source development.
Furthermore, we have already discussed which device would be best to start the project with. A music player is a relatively low-hanging fruit with modern hardware, but it already presents enough challenges for many of us.
